Strategy - Race

MSO = used in Mind Sports Olympiad.

2 Player Singles Only

Backgammon

board dice

Duration - 20 mins

Opening set up. Black moves from top right anti-clockwise. White moves from bottom right clockwise.

The board spaces are 24 triangular points.

2 dice are used to move 15 pieces each in opposite directions.

The destination is the 6 points of their home board from where pieces can be borne off to safety.

First to bear off all their pieces wins.

Lone pieces (a blot) on a point can be hit by an opposing piece.

Hit pieces are removed to the bar and must re-enter the board through their opponent's home board.

Two or more pieces on a point are safe.

A gammon (double game score) is won when the loser has not borne off any pieces.

A backgammon (triple game score) is won when the loser has at least one piece still in the winner's home board or on the bar.

During the game the value of the game can also be doubled and redoubled by each player passing the doubling cube to the other when he thinks he may be in an advantageous position.

Two or more pieces are safe.

There is no doubling dice.

Points are scored for opponent pieces reamaining on the board.

Patolli

patolli board  red pieces flat dice

Duration - 30 mins

Six pieces are moved up 3 arms of the cross following their respectively coloured footprints and back to their start point.

The leading piece governs when other pieces join the board.

Flat 2-sided dice are thrown the same number of times as pieces on the track, then decide which dice combination to match with which piece.

Solo pieces on a space can be taken and removed to start again.

The central black footprints are safe havens and can be occupied by pieces of both players at once.
